do: CATEDRAL NOTRE-DAME - PARIS, FRANÇA

É uma das catedrais mais famosas do mundo graças ao Victor Hugo e ao seu corcunda Quasimodo, que tornam ainda mais imortal a história de Notre-Dame.

Localizada na Île de la Cité, tem uma vista priveligiada para a cidade e para o Sena. A Catedral é de construção gótica e achei a fachada oeste impressionante, tanto em tamanho como na riqueza dos detalhes nela trabalhados. Tem três portais, o da Virgem, o do Julgamento e o de Santa Ana.

 

It is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world thanks to Victor Hugo and his hunchback Quasimodo, which makes the history of Notre-Dame even more long lasting.
Located on the Île de la Cité, it has a privileged view of the city and the Seine. The Cathedral is a Gothic building and I found the west facade impressive, both in size and richness of detail. It has three portals, the Virgin, the Judgment and the Santa Ana.

Para mim um dos elementos que suscita maior atenção são as gárgulas e sempre que via fotos desta Catedral lembrava-me de uma que vigiava Paris com o seu ar assustador e feroz, quem diria que servem para escoar água...

Gostei também da linha de estátuas que acompanhava toda a fachada, chama-se Galeria dos Reis e representa os monarcas franceses. Do pouco que conheço de Catedrais vejo que é comum fazer estas linhas de estátuas ou com reis ou com membros da igreja como cardeais ou até papas.

 

For me one of the elements that raises most attention are the gargoyles and whenever I saw pictures of this Cathedral I was reminded of one guarding Paris with his frightening and ferocious gaze, who would say that it's used to drain water...
I also enjoyed the line of statues that occupies the entire facade, called the Kings Gallery and represents the French monarchs. From what little I know of Cathedrals I do see it's common to do these lines of statues or kings or members of the church as cardinals and even popes.

 

 

Entrar na Catedral parecia ser um desafio, vimos uma grande fila á espera e pensávamos que se pagavam bilhetes, mas é de entrada livre (ou pelo menos era naquele dia ou áquela hora em que se celebrava missas da Páscoa), cometemos um pequeno "crime" e cortámos a fila entrando directamente. Eu sei, não é bonito mas eu também acho que está muito desorganizado porque os locais entravam sem esperar só os turistas faziam uma fila porque na realidade não sabiam muito bem porque estavam nela e tudo aquilo parecia tonto, um desperdicio de tempo. A solução seria organizar uma fila oficial, com aquelas tiras separadoras e evitar este tipo de constragimento em época alta.

Não fosse esta provavelmente a quinta catedral que tínhamos visto durante a nossa "road-trip" por França e diria que o seu interior era dos mais belos que já tinha visto, no entanto sendo de facto extraordinária não foi surpreendente. Uma vez mais é nos detalhes que se torna grande e imperdível.

 

Entering the cathedral seemed to be a challenge, we saw a long line waiting and we thought that you had to pay for the tickets, but entry is free (or at least it was that day or that hour in which they celebrated Easter Mass), we commited ​​a small "crime "and we cut directly entering the queue. I know, it's not pretty but I also think it is very disorganized because the locals got in without waiting and only the tourists were makking a queue and in reality they didn't quite know why they were in it and it all seemed so silly and a waist of time. The solution would be to organize an official queue, with those strips and dividers to prevent this type of thing in a high season.
If this wasn't probably the fifth cathedral we had seen during our "road-trip" to France and I would say that its interior was the most beautiful I'd ever seen, but actually being extraordinary was not surprising. Once again it is the details that becomes large and unmissable.

 

Tivémos ainda a sorte de assistir a uma parte da missa que estava a decorrer, eu não sou religiosa ou crente, mas há algo de belo nessas celebrações quando são bem feitas. Ouvimos os cânticos e contemplamos uma catedral cheia de gente que contrastava com tudo o que tínhamos visto até então, onde só os turistas preenchiam os espaços vazios.

Numa das capelas estava uma réplica da Catedral onde temos melhor percepção da sua arquitectura exterior.

 

We had the good fortune to attend a Mass that was going on, I'm not religious or a believer, but there is something beautiful when these celebrations are done well. We heard the chants and behold a cathedral full of people that contrasted with everything we had seen so far, where only tourists filled the empty spaces.
In one of the chapels there was a replica of the Cathedral where we have better perception of its exterior architecture.

 

 

 

 

Ao lado da estátua de Saint Térese estava a da Joana D'Arc, a única santa ali representada com uma indumentária de guerreira. A sua importância na história de França incontornável, são várias as cidades que lhe prestam homenagem e foi nesta mesma Catedral que no inicio do século XX ela foi beatificada.

A visita ficaria completa se tivéssemos subido á torre norte para ter uma visão da própria Catedral e da cidade, no entanto e porque a missa estava a decorrer não nos foi possível fazê-lo. Fica para uma próxima visita.

 

Beside the statue of Saint Terese was the Joan of Arc, the only saint represented there with a warrior attires. The visit would be complete if we had gone up the north tour to have a great sight of the Cathedral and the city, however and because mass was going on it wasn't possible to do so. Some other time.
